After the Feb 6 earthquakes in Turkiye (Turkey), millions of people lost their homes and are living outdoors in sub-zero temperatures.

Emergency supplies are low within Turkiye even though factories are producing at maximum capacity to meet the pressing needs.

Acknowledgement & Appreciation

Special thanks to all who believed in our cause and supported the initiative from the get-go, without which, the project may not have taken off or achieved the desired impact.

We would like to give a huge shoutout to:

Singapore Airlines

For flying the relief items from China to Turkiye, via Singapore on a total of 10 flights without charge. We appreciate the carrier prioritising the relief items on their flights knowing how precious cargo space is. Also, thanks to those at the airline who spent hours coordinating the complicated logistics of the shipments and for agreeing so readily to support this undertaking.

Beijing Aviation Ground Services

For waiving all terminal charges and warehouse storage fees at the Beijing international airport. This meant savings on costs for storage for the bulky four person tents and additional transport if stored elsewhere.

Harmony International Logistics

For covering part of the cargo handling costs. We also know it’s no easy feat unloading, processing and packing 548 tents onto pallets to ensure they are flight ready! This took place under the harsh cold conditions of Beijing’s winter.

Individual sponsors

To keep our commitment that all donations received for the initiative would go solely towards buying of relief items, we sought sponsors to cover the remaining cargo handling and transport costs of this initiative, amounting to about 8,500SGD. So, a special shout out to the few big hearted individuals who answered so readily to a separate call for additional help. Thank you once again for your generosity to help see this initiative through.

So, where do we go from here?

This has been a big question the team has been researching, discussing and putting much thought into.

It weighs on us that the road to recovery in Turkiye is a long one. The needs in the country’s earthquake stricken areas remain immense and recent flash floods in the affected zones have also posed new challenges.

To stay updated

Keep following our Turkiye Relief instagram page (@turkiyerelief), which will be kept active, to get Jac’s first-hand perspective of what’s happening on the ground.

Through news reports and Jac’s contacts in Turkiye, we are still hearing of many in the quake stricken areas who are still in dire need of basic items, like tents, underwear and hygiene supplies.

Jac will be embarking on a four-day trip to earthquake affected Antakya, Hatay from Monday (20 Mar) with other Istanbul-based Singaporean friends, who have been involved in relief efforts. They will be bringing with them bedsheets, blankets and other daily necessities for distribution, as requested by local organisations working in the earthquake zone.

To contribute

Many NGOs, groups, and individuals through other ground up initiatives in Turkiye continue their efforts to help those still affected by the earthquakes.

If you’d like to make a cash contribution, here are the links to some organisations who are working tirelessly on the ground:

Final Word

For us, this has been an undertaking never to be forgotten, one far exceeding our expectations both in terms of work involved as well as the prompt and positive response from those we reached out to.

Even though the journey had been filled with ups and downs, and fraught with seemingly insurmountable challenges, we have been buoyed by the outpouring of support and the trust that you have given us, energising us to complete the work under this initiative.

Thank you once again for the compassion you have shown for the people struggling to cope with the aftermath of the earthquakes in Turkiye and we hope you’ll continue to remember them in your thoughts and prayers and support them in whatever way you can.

With love & gratitude,

Jac, Leanne and Oli

Daily Updates

Day 22-24 (MAR 6-8)

  • It is official! The last batch of 150 four-person tents arrived in Istanbul on Wednesday (March 8) morning and has been handed to the Turkish Red Crescent for distribution to quake affected areas.
  • This completes our shipment of relief items under this warm shelter initiative! Since the launch of the fundraiser on February 13, we have with your contributions bought a total of 548 four-person tents for dispatch to those still dealing with the aftermath of the earthquakes in Turkiye.
  • Catch a glimpse of the final air shipment of tents on our sponsor Singapore Airlines' flight, as it left Singapore for Istanbul, as featured on CNA on Wednesday (March 8). We are grateful that the coverage helped raise awareness of the ongoing relief efforts. Video clip below!
  • It has been more than a month since the deadly earthquakes hit Turkiye and Syria, but we know that recovery works are far from over and much more needs to be done even as we wrap up this initiative. Look out for a full round up from the team in the coming days.
  • In the meantime, another huge thank you to everyone who chipped in and our sponsors who made this undertaking possible!

CNA news segment featuring our last shipment flight on 8 March 2023

Day 18-21 (MAR 2-5)

  • A small update about a big milestone. We placed our final order for 150 four-person tents with our supplier, still at that bulk discount price of 650RMB per piece. On Saturday (March 4), the items were sent to the Beijing airport cargo warehouse for packing and onward shipment. It’s full steam ahead as we head towards the final stretch of this Turkiye warm shelter initiative!
  • As of Sunday (March 5), another 110 four-person tents have safely arrived on our airline sponsor’s flights into Istanbul. In addition to earlier shipments, this rounds off the delivery of our largest order of 350 tents! The items were handed over to the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC or Kizilay), who have updated us that they are working with the state's disaster management agency AFAD on the distribution to quake affected areas.

Offloading our third batch of tents in IST airport on 3 March 2023

Day 14-17 (26 Feb - 1 Mar):

  • The flurry of activity has not stopped since our last update. We have managed to send more shipments of four-person tents on our airline sponsor's flights from Beijing to Singapore in the last few days. Today, 148 tents were flown on SQ’s scheduled flight from Singapore to Istanbul.
  • Another 92 tents are scheduled to reach Istanbul on Friday and we are now also working hard on securing the final batch of tents from our supplier.
  • We are very aware of and have been closely following reports surrounding TRC’s sale of tents to AHBAP, a Turkish non-governmental organisation also involved in earthquake relief efforts. In this regard, we have taken the following actions:
    • We have voiced our concern to TRC and pressed the organisation about this development in a written message to staff in its donation management department.
    • With every shipment of items, we have obtained a signed agreement with TRC, which clearly states that the tents donated will go towards supporting the humanitarian assistance efforts of TRC in addressing the needs of those in the affected earthquake areas. The agreement clearly states that the donated items are only for this intended purpose.
    • We have been in constant touch with TRC to have an oversight of the relief items and their plans, which involves coordination across multiple departments, amid a rapidly evolving situation in Turkiye.
    • In public statements, TRC’s president confirmed that it was their subsidiary that sold the tents it produced to AHBAP at cost. However, this activity is separate from TRC’s distribution of donated items, which TRC’s president states categorically that it does not sell. Read more here: https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/28/europe/turkey-earthquake-red-crescent-criticism-intl/index.html
    • AHBAP has also confirmed publicly that it had purchased the tents from Kızılay Çadır ve Tekstil A.Ş. a subsidiary of TRC. In their replies to us, TRC said that the entity involved is a separate affiliated commercial enterprise that manufactures tents.

Day 11-13 (23-25 Feb):

  • We’ve been a little quiet on the updates, but rest assured there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes! Following days of coordination, our largest order of 350 four-person tents was loaded by the supplier onto a really massive truck yesterday (Feb 24), which then made its journey from Tangshan, Hebei province to Beijing overnight. Leanne had been getting regular updates (and even a running commentary) from the tent supplier, who showed and assured us that the items were fastened and secured safely for the journey. He even got us a discounted price for the trucking of the items! The transport costs have been kept separate from the warm shelter fund and was sponsored by kind donors for this purpose.
  • All 350 tents arrived at the Beijing airport cargo warehouse this morning (Feb 25), where they were offloaded and checked to ensure every piece was accounted for. It was a massive undertaking that involved many people and man hours. Thank you to all who have worked so hard on this! 辛苦了! Watch the video below to get a sense of the scale of the operation.
  • The tents are now being progressively loaded onto pallets and will be flown on multiple Singapore Airlines’ flights from Beijing to Singapore in the next few days, before proceeding onward to Istanbul!
  • A shoutout to Beijing Aviation Ground Services (BGS) for kindly waiving all terminal charges and storage fees to support this initiative. We would also like to thank several individuals who have come onboard to sponsor the handling costs of the cargo for the next few flights. Thank you for your big hearts and for being so ready to help see this project through!
  • The team was given the opportunity to share more about the warm shelter initiative with CNA and the Straits Times. We wanted to highlight the incredibly generous support from so many of you (over 360 individuals) and had hoped the coverage would also shed light on the needs of the people in Turkiye, still coping with the aftermath of the earthquake. And, perhaps even encourage more to do what they can in their own ways in the days ahead!

Day 9 & 10 (21 & 22 Feb):

  • Precious cargo delivered! In the wee hours of Wednesday (Feb 22) morning, the first batch of 48 four-person tents was sent off on Singapore Airlines’ flight from Singapore to Istanbul - a journey of over 11 hours! The cargo loading and flight progress took place under the watchful eye of Leanne, who was also in touch with the SIA team in Istanbul to ensure the items were safely delivered. As you can see in the pictures, the tents arrived on yet another beautiful blue skied day!
  • In Istanbul, Jac was in touch with the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay or TRC) staff in charge of receiving humanitarian aid at the airport to inform them that the first shipment was arriving on Wednesday. After the items arrived, the tents were received by TRC who provided us updates on customs clearance and other paperwork. The tents were then transported on their trucks to the TRC warehouse, where they will be distributed to the earthquake affected areas.
  • With a smooth delivery of this first batch of tents, the next shipment is already in the works! We have placed an even bigger order for 350 more four-person tents today at the same discounted bulk price of 650RMB per piece. This will cost 227,500RMB and will allow at least 1,400 more quake survivors to have a temporary roof over their heads in the wintry cold. These will be sent out in batches on multiple flights out of Beijing, which have been lined up in the coming days.

Day 8 (20 Feb):

  • It's a big day for the warm shelter initiative! After days and many hours spent by team members on the most challenging of logistical coordination, involving many parties and tedious documentation, our first shipment of 48 four-person tents was loaded onboard a flight (courtesy of Singapore Airlines) from Beijing to Singapore, for forward shipment to Istanbul. All this on a beautiful, sunny, blue skied day in Beijing no less! Your contributions are going a long way (quite literally) to help the Turkiye quake survivors.
  • Leanne was on the tarmac, personally overseeing and witnessing the loading of the cargo, making sure the items got on the plane! We hope the pictures of this milestone will put a smile on your face, as it did ours!
  • We closed our fundraiser today at 1200h. The final amount received for this campaign is 60,494SGD & 45,720RMB. Truly beyond our expectations, thank you again!
  • More supplies are in the pipeline awaiting shipment in the coming days/weeks. We have informed the Turkish Red Crescent to expect arrival of the tents, which they have confirmed will be needed all through March. Follow our updates here and on our instagram page @turkiyerelief

Day 7 (19 Feb):

UPDATE: CLOSE OF TURKIYE RELIEF WARM SHELTER COLLECTION

  • It has been a week since we launched the warm shelter relief fund to help survivors who have been left homeless by the Turkiye earthquake and the response has been nothing short of staggering. As of EOD 19 Feb, the total amount received is 60,242.31SGD (21 Feb: figure edited due to typo) and 45,720RMB, from over 360 individuals - way more than what we could have ever hoped for or imagined. We have decided to end the collection of funds under this initiative to focus on getting the tents and shipping them out to Turkiye through the most efficient and expeditious means. Thank you so much for your generosity!
  • Any funds received after 20 Feb 1200h (Singapore Time) will be donated in full to AHBAP, a highly regarded Turkish non-governmental organisation working actively on the ground, with volunteers in 68 provinces across the country supporting both rescue and relief efforts (https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey).
  • Please share this info with those you have rallied to support this initiative! The IFRC has said the recovery process in Turkiye and Syria is a long one, describing it as a marathon not a sprint.
  • We have been truly moved by the compassion and love shown by everyone who has contributed so generously and promptly in the past week and will treasure the warmth we have felt from all of you through your support. We will continue to update you on the progress in the procurement and shipment of relief supplies.

Day 6 (18 Feb):

  • We are most excited to share that the first shipment comprising 48 four-person tents arrived at the Beijing airport cargo warehouse this morning. These were transported overnight from our tent supplier’s factory in Tangshan, Hebei province, which neighbours Beijing, and was received by our cargo handling agent. All the requisite paperwork (there was a lot of it) was presented and customs were cleared without a hitch. The tents have been packed onto two cargo pallets and are now ready to be loaded onto our airline sponsor’s next available flight. (Check out the pictures below!)
  • The team has also alerted the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay or TRC) and been liaising with them to ensure they are ready to receive the shipment in Istanbul. We are now lining up the purchase of more tents and shipments in the coming days. TRC tells us that tents will be of need for at least the next month or so, as the road to recovery and rebuilding in the affected earthquake areas takes time. Stay tuned for more updates.
  • The total raised for the warm shelter fund stands at 57,907.31SGD and 45,720RMB as of EOD 18 Feb.

Our first batch of tents packed and all set to board our airline sponsor’s next available flight out of Beijing to Istanbul via Singapore.

This is what the tents being sent to Turkiye look like. Each weighs 60kg and is 3.7m long, 3.2m wide and 2.67m tall when set up! A tent can house at least four people and comes with insulation against the cold. The tents have been reviewed and approved by TRC.

Day 5 (17 Feb):

  • As of EOD 17 Feb, the warm shelter fund stands at 53,757.31SGD and 42,720RMB in total! That works out to around 479 four-person tents for the people in Turkiye.
  • After quality checks on tents and having ensured everything’s in place to transport and receive the supplies safely, we have managed to buy 48 four person tents costing 31,200RMB (6,240SGD) in total (i.e. 650RMB or 130SGD per tent), to be squeezed into cargo space available on the next earliest flight out of Beijing. This quantity will provide shelter with insulation from the cold of a frigid winter for at least 192 people! Meanwhile, we are working on bigger shipments which we hope can be loaded on the next few available flights to Istanbul via Singapore.
  • Rest assured, our team members have been working hard, some round the clock, to sort out endless logistics issues and to explore more avenues to get relief supplies from China to Turkey in greater quantities at a faster speed. We are exploring the possibility of flying supplies on our sponsor's flights out of other Chinese cities besides Beijing. This has involved learning the different cargo and customs handling procedures, which vary from airport to airport, filling up forms, getting multiple layers of approvals, not to mention grasping technical jargon relating to cargo, pallets and customs clearance (in Chinese at that!), a tedious but necessary learning journey altogether for us.

Day 4 (16 Feb):

  • To ensure quake victims are getting what they need is priority, we are in close contact with staff from the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay or TRC) daily to get the latest updates on items most urgently required by those affected as the situation on the ground is constantly evolving. This is to ensure that the contributions you have entrusted to us are deployed in the most efficient and beneficial way to the quake survivors. Today, TRC has advised us that tents are of the most pressing need as many remain homeless in Turkiye. So in our first shipment, we will prioritise the shipment of four-person tents.
  • A new milestone! The total warm shelter relief fund as of EOD 16 Feb stands at a total of 51,226.81SGD & 41,000RMB, the equivalent of 457 four-person tents!
  • Thanks to the prompt and generous response to this urgent effort, we are in the final stages of our talks with our supplier, freight forwarder, cargo handler and airline sponsor, coordinating the first bulk shipment of the most urgently needed items. We are working at full speed to iron out the nitty gritties relating to logistics such as the most efficient way of stacking items on pallets to maximise the load in this shipment, and working out the most optimum timing for the delivery, cargo clearance and packing to minimise risk of incurring unnecessary costs. Taking care of these details will help ensure a smooth delivery to the intended destination.
  • More good news. Our freight forwarder, in addition to handling the export customs clearance and waiving cargo handling fees, has agreed to absorb the cost of warehouse space needed for the packing of relief supplies for the air shipment! Thank you for your generosity.

Day 3 (15 Feb):

  • We continue to be amazed by the outpouring of support! Just 2.5 days since we started reaching out to friends and family, the total warm shelter relief fund as of EOD 15 Feb stands at 43,485SGD & 38,000RMB. That works out to about 334 four-person tents and 165 sleeping bags (good for up to -10 ° C weather) respectively.
  • Thanks to Guangzhou-based bilingualist, Berlinda Yong, we now have a poster in Chinese for our Chinese speaking friends!
  • We've started a new Instagram page! Follow @turkiyerelief to track the progress of the initiative and follow Jac on the ground in Istanbul
  • International friends, we heard you! We have figured out a payment option via PayPal to accept donations in other currencies, via an account set up in Oli’s name. If you’re interested, scroll down for details in the FAQ below. Thank you for wanting to contribute to this relief effort and not letting distance hinder you.
  • Thanks to Jac’s mum, “Meiyun Jie”, as we fondly call her, for convincing the supplier to give us a further discount on the price of a 4 person tent - from 750RMB (150SGD) to 650RMB (130SGD). We've updated this in the FAQ below too.
  • A standout moment from today. We received an email from a high schooler studying in an international school in Shanghai, asking how he could help spread the word! We are so moved to see such compassion in someone so young.

Day 2 (14 Feb):

  • They say ‘Love is in the air’ on Valentine's Day but we are feeling it right here in our hearts and in the relief fund. As of EOD 14 Feb, we have collected a total of 28,685SGD & 28,000RMB. Guess good things do seem to come in pairs (or quite close)? That's the equivalent of about 191 tents and 121 sleeping bags! Thank you for your compassion and your love.
  • A new sponsor came onboard our initiative today! We are thankful for a freight forwarder in Beijing who will take care of export customs clearance and cargo handling fees.
  • We were excited to launch our website this morning and that you’re here reading this gladdens us. Our hope is to give you all the information and updates you need to track your contribution. Thank you all who are contributing in one way or another.
  • Jac in Istanbul was able to learn first hand the challenges in getting relief supplies locally while she was out visiting wholesale stores to buy daily supplies for donation, as part of her neighbourhood community efforts. A tent supplier she spoke to says it’s all hands on deck to cope with the humongous need of getting shelter to an estimated million still homeless in the quake regions, where tents produced locally are being bought, regardless of price or type i.e. even summer tents are being deployed. Local news outlets have also reported that factories are running at maximum capacity. Our supply and delivery of insulated tents produced in China purchased with your donations will no doubt be of great help to these displaced quake survivors coping with sub-zero winter conditions.

Day 1 (13 Feb):

  • After a weekend of planning and discussion (plus approvals and fact-gathering conversations), we finally launched our fundraiser. If you're reading this, thanks for being here and for being a part of it!
  • The poster was designed by Jac's sister Janna and her partner Claudius. Both are advertising art directors lending their talents for a great cause!
  • We started sending the poster out to friends and family at night, and to our surprise started receiving contributions almost immediately.
  • As of EOD 13 Feb, we have collected a total of 4,500SGD & 7,000RMB, coincidentally enough to buy 30 tents and 30 sleeping bags respectively!

FAQ

Who is organising this?

Jokingly we like to call ourselves “the three randoms”, but this is a friendship that has been anything but that. Born out of fun times, good meals and long chats in New York, Beijing, Yunnan and Singapore over the years, the trio of Singaporeans - Jacintha Phua, Leanne Koh and Olivia Siong - are now hoping to help those affected by the deadly earthquakes in Turkiye, with the support of family and friends. Jac the digital nomad is currently based in Istanbul, while self-professed aviation fanatic Leanne and Olivia or Oli to most of her friends, are living and working in Beijing.

Leanne and Oli in China

Jac in Turkiye

Why are we doing this?

Like many of you, we followed with a heavy heart the devastating news and the aftermath of the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkiye and Syria in the early hours of February 6. Seeing headlines of an ever climbing death toll, widespread destruction and those displaced, led us to explore how we can best help towards relief efforts.

To understand what was most needed (cash or in-kind donations) and which channels would get what’s needed to those affected by the quakes most efficiently mindful that time is of the essence, we read up on the latest developments, consulted the Turkish Embassy in China, the Turkish Red Crescent (Türk Kızılay or TRC), community workers in relief distribution centres and Jac’s NGO contacts in Turkiye.

We learnt that donations of urgently needed supplies would be of the greatest value at this time. More specifically, there’s an immense need for shelter and temporary housing as over a million are homeless in Turkiye alone. Tents and sleeping bags are in short supply, leaving many living on the streets without any shelter to cope with the freezing winter cold as recovery and rebuilding efforts begin.

To put the scale of this massive need into perspective, the impact area is 35-45 times the size of Singapore (85-100 km²), with more than double the population of Singapore affected (12 million people).

How exactly will this work?

We are reaching out to family and friends to make cash contributions of any amount towards this cause

Pooling these funds together, we will buy sleeping bags and tents directly from the factory of the world (China) in bulk at a discounted price

The items will be flown from Beijing to Singapore and then to Istanbul, where it will be handed over to the Turkish Red Crescent (Türk Kızılay) for distribution to affected areas

3

We have sought sponsorship and are grateful to Singapore Airlines for agreeing to transport the relief items for us without airfreight charges!

Who gets the supplies?

We are in direct contact with staff from the Turkish Red Crescent (Türk Kızılay or TRC), one of the largest humanitarian organisations in Turkiye that’s at the heart of the relief efforts for this crisis. They will receive the items that you are contributing and distribute it to those in affected areas. TRC is part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the world’s largest humanitarian network, which has called for long term support for the people in Turkiye and Syria. The IFRC says the Turkish Red Crescent has been key in providing access for help to reach the hardest hit areas, deploying more than 4,000 staff and volunteers in affected provinces with supplies of food and basic aid items for the quake survivors.

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

The level of pain and suffering is immense and the need for support is equally enormous. This humanitarian response is not a sprint. It is a marathon. We call on the international community to support the people of Syria and Türkiye not just in the coming days, but also in the months and years needed for recovery.

How do I give?

Thank you for your generosity! As of 20 Feb 2023, we have ended the collection of funds under this initiative to focus on getting the tents and shipping them out to Turkiye.

Any funds received after 20 Feb 1200h (Singapore Time) will be donated in full to AHBAP, a highly regarded Turkish non-governmental organisation working actively on the ground, with volunteers in 68 provinces across the country supporting both rescue and relief efforts (https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey).

What can my contribution get?

100% of your contribution will go towards the purchase of sleeping bags and tents. Given the urgency, we have checked with multiple suppliers in China - sourcing for those who have available stock and can give us a good deal. Besides a discounted price for buying in bulk, suppliers we are working with have also agreed to lower prices further knowing that the items are going towards relief efforts in Turkiye.
